My final film,  Willy Mammoth.  Lots of work went into it.

Lighting and Rendering classes final project

Which ones real and which one is fake?  You make the call.  Well in reality it should be obvious, but I am still pretty darn happy with the results.  I now officially can say I know how to light, texture, and render in 3D.

My favorite painting edited in Photoshop to be a vertical poster.

Results are pretty good in my opinion.  I wanted to show it off separately because you can't really see it very well in my bedroom render from the previous post.

The Fruit Bow.  I made the fruit all rotten and as unappealing as I could without changing the geometry.  The model was given to us, the model had to be at least 10 years old.  I used a layered texture shader on the orange because the geometry was so awful that UVing it would be impossible.

This unfortunate creation was the interior lighting assignment.  I rendered it wrong, it took 90 years still somehow for being such a low res image and the color is jacked up.   Also I don't think this ones theme was very successful but I feel like sharing it here because it was a learning experience.

Lately I have been learning how to render in Maya with the Arnold renderer.  All of these renders are assignments, but I think I went above and beyond what the assignments had called for because I want to be making things I am actually proud of rather than just doing the bare minimum,

Raptor Island.  The island scene needed to have a the raptor model from our first assignment.  My raptor was zombie inspired, if I had more time I might have themed him a bit better for a snowy scene like this.  The snow is on image planes and there are several layers of them.

I just competed in a 24 hour animation contest.  This was no ordinary contest however because this one involved over 1000 participants making up 200 teams from several dozen colleges located all over this big beautiful planet we call "Earth."  At the start we where given an unknown theme and then had 24 hours to make up a story and animate it from scratch.  The theme was "empathy" and "overcoming."

Here is what we came up with: Link to youtube video!!!

Concept sketch for Willy.  A cave man in there too because why not.  I had a lot clearer idea on how I wanted the cave man to look so there are only a few concepts.  Willy on the other hand I was not sure how cute or ugly I wanted him to be.

A poster I made for a local event called "Cardboard Challenge".  The Cardboard Challenge is based off of a short documentary called Caine's Arcade which was about a boy named Caine who built his own arcade from carboard in his dad's auto parts shop somewhere in LA.  This documentary inspired many kids and families around the world to be more creative.  The Cardboard Challege is an annual event for kids to use their imaginations for an afternoon and make some fun cardboard creations.

The poster was created using photoshop and some real cardboard.  The Robot was the first one I created so, in my opinion, he is my least favorite, but I learned a lot doing it so the next three went a lot quicker and smoother.

The compositing is loosely based on a plate my sister had as a kid.

Did a shot for Oliver Stone's new movie Snowden at work this week.  It is definitely reel material.  I just need to find out the protocol for using it in a reel since it is only rotoscope work.  Do I wait for the composited shot to be done or do I just show it on a solid background? I don't know yet.  But I am happy with it and everybody else was too.
Here is Mat the penguin.  The second part of my project.  it is not as successful as Joanna the panda I think it's safe to say.  The problem was I did not shoot nearly enough footage.  Having a back of the head shot would have improved things immensely.  Also I was unable to rotopaint out the beak because tracks only work when the tracking object stays in frame the entire time, as far as I know.  In conclusion this project taught me I have more learning to do.

My friend Joanna as a red panda.  Part of my final project for the Vfx class at Daemen.
I learned much from this project.  Such as the limits of what each node can do and the order you must put certain nodes in to make them work.  It is a little unfortunate that the footage of Joanna is significantly better quality than that of the red panda, however i am still happy with the result.

A composite i did for class of a robot and an explosion.  Most of the rubble piles where assets I created.  The swooping plane is also an asset I created and is in my opinion the best part of the scene.
Annoyingly, youtube cuts off the first second of the video so the fighter jet gets cut off which is no bueno because that is my favorite part.

Her is the what the script tree looks like

I am teaching animation basics to high school students.  Here are some of the examples I have used and examples I plan on using.

The first example is a really really crudely done ball bounce.  Before I made the ball bounce they had zero ability to visualize what I was talking about.

The next thing I taught them was the leaf test AKA the feather test.  Here it is, also fairly crude.

Here is a more fun (hopefully) project to teach the kids.  I want them to do a morph between 2 objects.  In my case I did a whale to a boat.  But since it is a very basic class I will instead likely have them morph a circle into a square or a star into a circle, just morphing shapes to start.  This assignment is also good because we have only 5 computers for 12 kids so I put them in groups of 2 and have them take turns drawing the frames.

This is the walk cycle I will show them, I doubt they will get this far but if they do HOORAY!

A year ago while I was still at college I work on a ZINE called Moist City.  A ZINE just for the record is short for magazine but it is normally smaller in literal size, that is why the letters are big in order to make up for the paper that is small.  I always read the word with a hard "I" and it reminds me of Dasein, which has nothing to do with anything.  Anyway, the subject of Moist City was all things moist.  My friend Kevin came would describe things as moist and his friend Nick thought this was very funny and was interested in ZINEs so this was his first ZINE.

Here are 2 of the 3 things I submitted to it:

This one I pitched as "the dry page" because the rest of the ZINE was going to be so moist that I thought people might need a break.

This one was selected, some of the background elements where taken out like the head in the top left and the t shaped thing in the top right.

The third drawing I submitted I could not find because it was half digital.  It was a 6 frame comic based on the opening of Citizen Kane where instead of him saying "rosebud" he says "moist city" and it was first page on the ZINE.   If I can locate a physical copy I will update this.

A bunch of my drawings

The composition makes it look like there is some kind of story going on.
